About Upgrades
If you have an Untangle Gateway Lite, go to Upgrading Your Untangle Gateway Lite.
The Untangle Server has two methods of keeping your network security up-to-date: upgrades and updates. Upgrades apply to the Software Products and the Untangle Server platform itself, while updates apply to associated data such as virus signatures and phishing site lists. Upgrades always involve a version change to the Untangle Server software, while updates do not. Upgrades can be scheduled or disabled, while updates cannot.
By default, the Untangle Server downloads and installs upgrades to its software. In some cases, upgrades intentionally restart the Untangle Server, temporarily disrupting your network. However, by default, this restart occurs during non-business hours.
The Upgrade Manager controls software upgrades for your Untangle Server. You can launch the Upgrade Manager from the Untangle Client's Navigation pane as shown in Figure, Upgrade Manager.
- To manually upgrade your Untangle Server, go to Manually Upgrading Untangle Server.
- To turn off automatic upgrades, go to Turning Off Automatic Upgrades.
- To specify a specific time to download and install upgrades, go to Specifying When Untangle Server Checks for Automatic Upgrades.
Turning Off Automatic Upgrades
In some cases, upgrades intentionally restart the Untangle Server, temporarily disrupting your network; however, by default this restart occurs during non-business hours. If you feel this restart could be disruptive to your business, you can change the upgrade time.
To turn off automatic upgrades:
- From the Navigation Pane, click the Upgrade button. The Upgrade Config window appears.
- Click the Settings tab.
- In the Automatic Installation Of Upgrades pane, click the Do not automatically install new upgrades radio button.
- Click the Save Settings button. The Untangle Server continues to register updates as being available, but they will not be done automatically. Please refer to Manually Upgrading Untangle Server for this part of the process.
Specifying When Untangle Server Checks for Automatic Upgrades
By default, your Untangle Server checks for upgrades between 1:00am and 5:00am local time. The specific time assigned to each Untangle Server is random, so that your Untangle Server does not compete with other Untangle Servers that also desire upgrades. Depending on your company's hours of operation, you might want to change the default upgrade time.
To change the default upgrade time:
- From the Navigation Pane, click the Config tab.
- Click the Settings tab.
- In the Upgrade Check Days pane, specify the time, and click the Save Settings button.
Manually Upgrading Untangle Server
Regularly perform this procedure if you disabled automatic updates.
To manually upgrade your Untangle Server:
- From the Navigation Pane, click the Config tab.
- Click the Upgrade button. The Upgrade Config window appears. If updates are available, the Upgrade Config windows lists the updates by Software Product as shown in Figure, Upgrade Manager.
- Select the updates that you want to install, and click the Upgrade button.
