Talk:QuickStart Guide: Untangle for Windows

I just (2 January 2008) installed Untangle for Windows. The process took some ingenuity, and still needs some troubleshooting. I'll post the most serious problem on the Forum, but I'm reporting some suggestions for your Quick Guide here. You have a table for common problems, but these issues are sufficiently detailed that they would not easily fit into the table. I'll explain them here. I request that an Untangle wiki editor either incorporate them in the article or suggest how they would prefer the changes to be made, and I'll make them. (I have a MediaWiki at home for my notes and permanent records, so I am quite familiar with page construction.)

  1. Windows message: System Error. There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network.
    • Explanation: Either (a) You have used static IP addressing or (b) You are inside a router that has been told not to assign an automatic IP address that has access to the internet.
    • Discussion: I'm not completely sure what is going on, but I had to reinstall Untangle with "automatic" IP assignment AND open additional IP address space to the internet to get rid of this message.
  2. Problem: After Untangle is "running," trying to Launch Untangle Administration (LIA) gets the message can't establish a connection to the server at
    • Explanation: You need to install Java.
    • Discussion: This is a critical path in the installation. Once Untangle comes up, the new user must be able to access some details of the process. Your system design assumes the Apache server is accessible. I have found that is it inaccessable in several circumstances. You need to provide an alternative, or at least detailed instructions on how to surmount the problem. See 4 below.
  3. Issue: Which Java?
    • Suggestion: When the LIA web page comes up, it offers two links for Java: offline and online. Offline is actually online, and links to the 6u1 version. Online links to the Sun Java download page, and currently offers the 6u11 version. I installed the 6u11 version, which appeared to work, but see the next problem.
  4. Problem: Untangle for Windows dies in less than 12 hours.
    • Comment: This is a show-stopper.
    • Discussion: I will describe this in detail in a Forum post. After an apparently successful installation of Untangle for Windows, I left it on overnight, to see what might appear in the logs the next morning. When I returned, it was inaccessible and the network was almost unusable. The one functional feature was inter-network communication among my local computers. The probable cause is that VMware player changed the IP addresses of VMnet1 and VMnet8 overnight.

In the hour or so it took me to craft these notes, I have not yet received the "validation" email from the "preferences" page, but the email registered with your Forum under the same username has been validated.

Update: see Forum post 44077 for the details of the last problem.
