This document is designed to provide step-by-step instructions for a first-time installation of an Untangle Server. It also applies if you have reverted your Untangle Server back to factory defaults.

Operating System Installation

This applies only to user-supplied hardware.

If you are installing Untangle Server on hardware which you have supplied (i.e. installing from Untangle CD/download), a new operating system will be installed. This operating system has been tested for compatibility with Untangle. Any existing information on your disk drive will be overwritten.

This process will take several minutes, and several messages will be displayed during this period. You should be alert for errors that are displayed (as compared to regular messages, many of which appear ominous). If any errors result in termination of the installation process, document the messages as well as possible so that you can get the best possible support from the Untangle Forums or from Untangle Support.

Untangle Server Installation

This applies only to user-supplied hardware.

After OS installation has been completed, the Untangle Server application framework will be installed. This process takes several minutes, and a blue screen with an Untangle logo will be visible. A horizontal status bar is visible below the logo showing the degree of completion (with regard to the number of processes taking place, not the time involved). When complete, the initial Untangle screen appears. Click on Launch Untangle Client to begin the process.

The Configuration Setup Wizard

When you initially setup the Untangle Server, a number of configuration steps must be completed in order to provide baseline information. This is accomplished through the Setup Wizard, which walks you through the process.

Setting up the Admin User

This screen allows you to enter a password for your Untangle server and define the timezone that it operates in. Your Untangle server will be a critical element in your network infrastructure, so you should create a password that is not easily guessed.

Network Interface Connection Status

This screen provides a status display of your Untangle server's networking hardware. An external and internal interface are required for your Untangle server to function correctly, and you may also setup a DMZ interface. In the screenshot shown below, you can see that the external and internal network cards are installed and functioning properly. There is no DMZ interface installed.

Once you request a connectivity test, the Connectivity Check window appears. Please pay attention to the specific messages, as this is a two-part screen. The first part shows you that a test is occuring, and the second part shows you the results of the test. As shown below, both internet and DNS connectivity were found to be fully functional. If either did not succeed, an appropriate message would be displayed to alert you to a connectivity problem.

Untangle Server Mode

This step of the setup allows you to determine the mode that the Untangle server will operate in. If it is to be a router, it will supply Network Address Translation (NAT) and DHCP Addressing for all components in your network infrastructure. If configured as a bridge, it will be an in-line component that operates under the control of an existing network router.

Untangle Server SMTP Settings

The Untangle Server has built-in capabilities to send email when required for administration and reporting. Alternatively, you can define an existing SMTP mail server to use for sending email. If you are using an existing mail server, you must provide server name, port and authentication information.

Untangle Server E-Mail Test

The final piece of the puzzle is to test your ability to send email from the Untangle Server. It is your option whether or not to do this, but this is your way of knowing if your Untangle Reports can be delivered as planned. Enter a valid email address to send a test message to and press the Proceed button. Wait a moment and check to see if the email was received properly. If so, click the Close button. Your Untangle Server has been successfully configured at a basic level. Now you are ready to load Untangle applications into your rack!
