About Branding Manager

Branding Manager is designed to allow you to rebrand user-facing components by adding your:

  • Company Logo
  • Company Name (used in window title)
  • Company URL (used as link for image)
  • Contact Name (used in quarantine and reports)
  • Contact Email (used in quarantine and reports)

This information will replace the "Untangle" branding in all user-facing interactions, such as block pages, quarantine digest emails, quarantine digests, etc.

Note: This is not meant to remove all Untangle branding from the Untangle server. The administrator UI still contains many references to Untangle.

For html/css experts, combine branding with a custom block page skin, and custom rack skin, and you've got a fully customized style. Of course, you don't need a custom skin to change any of the branding elements:

Settings

This section reviews the different settings and configuration options available for Branding Manager.

Loading and Re-Loading Branding Elements

Custom logos are loaded into the Untangle environment using a file browser widget which accesses the system through the Administrator client. If you, after loading your branding elements, were to upgrade your Untangle Server, either manually or using automatic updates, all branding changes are preserved.

There are no restrictions with regard to when or how often branding changes may occur. Changes take effect immediately system-wide, though past PDF-based reports will reflect branding present on the system at the time they were generated. Also, changes to branding do not have any effect on system performance.

To load and reload branding elements:

Before You Begin: You must install Branding Manager to rebrand the Untangle Server.

  1. Back up your Untangle Server just in case something unexpected appends and you need to restore. Custom branding causes default branding text strings to be lost.
Name that backup something intuitive, such as UntangleBrand.backup. After you're done loading the branding elements, you'll make another backup so that you have a backup of your custom brand.
  2. (Optional) Fine-tune your logo or place your logo on top of the blank template below and save it to disk. Image:LogoTemplate.png
  3. Click on Settings button on the Branding module.
  4. Ensure that you can access the logo from the Untangle Server on which the Untangle client is running, and that your logo meets the following requirements:
    • Recommended logo size is 150x100 pixels. Logos that are not of the recommended size might be distorted in some instances, but will render without error.
    • Maximum dimensions are 166x100 pixels. The current branding panel does not limit the logo image dimensions or size.
    • All image formats(.png, .jpg, .gif, etc) are supported. Note: Animation appears to work but it can have unwanted side effects on the report PDFs.
  5. In the Logo area, click the Use Custom Logo radio button, then click Browse to select your logo file.
  6. Click on Upload button to upload the file to the Untangle Server.
  7. In the Contact Information, provide information so that your customer knows how to contact you:
    • Each field has a maximum text field length of 256 characters. Excessively long text strings may not be rendered completely or might be truncated (currently there is no length limit enforced).
    • Embedded HTML is supported. Provide text only.
    Company Name Your company's name.
Company URL Your company's website. Must be a fully-qualified internet address required (for example, http://www.acme.com).
Contact Name The name of the Network Administrator that should be contacted.
Contact Email The email address of the Network Administrator that should be contacted. Must conform to standard email naming standards (for example, jsmith@acme.com).
  8. Back up your Untangle Server again. Name that backup something intuitive, such as MyCompanyBrand.backup.

That's all! How does it look?

Uploading a Block Page Skin

If you download a skin from the community, click the thumbnail to verify that the skin is appropriate. The last thing you want is to load a skin for your boss or customer and have it display an obnoxious blockpage. Untanglers are pretty well-behaved, but you just never know. Do recognize that Untangle is busy creating important features for you and so, consequently, doesn't have the time to vet every blockpage that's shared.

Creating a Block Page Skin

If you know a little about web technologies such as CSS and HTML and you are interested in making your own skin simply download Untangle's sample skin, edit the style sheet and images to reflect your company's color palette. You can use an HTML editor such a Dreamweaver. Notepad works too. Then, upload the skin. That's it!

Fine-Tune Your Logo

It's not required that you fine-tune your logo, but it will make your look more professional. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Convert your image to grey scale
  • Resize your image to optimize for the best fit.
  • Place a transparent image of your logo on a background
To convert your image to Greyscale:
  1. Open your logo image file in Photoshop, or another image editor.
  2. In Photoshop, choose File > Save As Web & Devices.
  3. Specify GIF and Greyscale, then click Save.
