Choosing Which Applications To Install

Now that your Untangle Server is up and running, let's install the products that you need. You're probably wondering, What products should I install? Good question.

Untangle enables you to build a custom solution from a large pool of product offerings. Here's how we do it:

Method Overview
Package From the Library, choose from the two packages:
Individually From the Library, pick and choose from both free and paid products.
Wizard From the the Application Wizard, answer a series of questions. Based on your answers, the wizard prompts you to install a recommended list of products (you can modify this list, if you want).

Downloading Applications

One of the unique features of the Untangle Server is the ability to add and remove Applications to fit the needs of your business. Each Application has a dedicated function to enhance your network, and can be installed and configured independently of other Applications. This procedure assumes that you want to install the Applications in the Default Rack. For more complex deployments, you can create custom virtual racks.

To download and install an Application using the bundle or ala carte method:

Before You Begin: Choose Which Applications To Install

  1. From the Navigation pane, click the Apps tab.
  2. Click the More Info icon for the Application or bundle that you want to download. The Untangle Server directs you to the Untangle Store where you can do one or more of the following, depending on the Application:
    • Subscribe to that Application
    • Download a trial version of that Application
    • Download a free version of that Application

Not all paid products have trials available (for example, Live Support). To learn about trials or if you have purchasing questions, go to Purchasing & Subscription FAQs.

  3. Verify that the Application(s) downloaded correctly. If the Application appears in your Apps tab, then you successfully downloaded the Application.
  4. In the Apps tab, click the Buy Now, Install, or Trial Install icon for the Application or bundle that you just downloaded.
  5. Enlarge
  6. Wait a few seconds while the Untangle Server checks for available updates. If there are updates available for the Application that you want to install, the Untangle Server automatically installs the updates in addition to the actual software.
  7. Verify that your Application(s) installed.
    • The Application installs into the rack to the right and then automatically turns on. OpenVPN is the only Applications that does not automatically turn on. Once installed, each Application shows its faceplate:

    • All the Applications in a bundle appear in the rack, if you installed a bundle.
    • Untangle product offerings install as virtual rack products, services products, and non-rack products. Non-rack products do not show up in your rack. If, after you install a product, you don't see the product in your rack, don't be alarmed. You must drill down into the GUI to view and configure non-rack products.
    • The Untangle Client prevents you from installing multiple copies of any Application into the same rack.

Next Step:

Downloading Applications (Wizard)

If, after you install a product, you don't see the product in your rack, don't be alarmed. Untangle product offerings install as virtual rack products, services products, and non-rack products. Non-rack products do not show up in your rack. You must drill down into the GUI to configure them.

The wizard installs a recommended list of products, though you can modify this selection:

  • For paid products, the wizard adds the bundle that contains the paid Application(s) that you need. You can choose not to install this package. You must install the entire bundle to get any of the products that it contains.
  • For free products, the wizard adds the individual Applications that you need. You don't need to install all of them as you can pick and choose.

To download and install an Application using the wizard:

Before You Begin: Choose Which Applications To Install

  1. From the rack, click the What Apps should I use? button.
  2. Install available updates. If there are updates available for the Untangle Server, Untangle Client, or the Application that you want to install, the Untangle Client prompts you to upgrade; otherwise, the wizard launches.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions, selecting the check boxes that represent your needs.

When you first install an Application, it is turned on automatically.

To turn on and off an Application:

    1. Click the toggle button to either the ON state or OFF state.
    2. Verify the Application's status using the following indicators:
      • Status indicator light. This indicator has four possible colors.
        • Gray indicates an app is off and ready to be turned on.
        • Yellow means an app is changing from off to on (or vice versa).
        • Green shows an app is on and behaving normally, while
        • Red warns an app is on but an abnormal condition has occurred.
      • Activity Meter. Each Application has one or more Activity Meter. Activity meters provide a quick view into the activity of an Application, and change in real time as a given Application processes network traffic. If the Activity meter indicates activity, the Application is turned on. You can obtain more detailed activity data from the Event Logs.

    Removing Applications

If you want to remove an Application in order to troubleshoot, turn off the Application instead. Removing an Application from a rack does not unsubscribe you from that Application.

Remove the Application from the required virtual rack(s) by doing one of the following:

    Note:
    • If you want to remove a Services Application, remove the Application from any rack that contains the Application.
    • If you want to remove a Non-Services Application, remove the Application from all virtual racks.
    • From the Application's faceplace, Shift-click on the power toggle. The Application disappears from the virtual rack, and now appears in your My Apps.
    • From the Application's faceplace, click the Show Settings button, and click Remove button. The Application disappears from the virtual rack, and now appears in your Apps.

    Unsubscribing from Premium Applications

Uninstalling a paid Application from a rack does not mean that you unsubscribed from that Application. If you do not unsubscribe, Untangle Server continues to bill you for that subscription.

To unsubscribe from a paid Application, you must phone Untangle Technical Support.
